Oman unveils shore power investment opportunities

05/11/24

Omans Sohar Port and Freezone recently revealed a strategic investment opportunity focused on the development of shore power infrastructure.

The Sohar Port and Freezones power project aims to mitigate emissions and also positions Sohar as a leading hub for innovation and growth in the region. The initiative offers a valuable avenue for companies seeking to align with sustainable practices. Interested parties are invited to submit their expressions of interest by mid January 2025.

Shore power, also known as "cold ironing" or "alternative maritime power," enables the provision of electrical power to vessels at dock from shore facilities. This capability allows ships to turn off their diesel engines while in port, resulting in significant reductions in air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. As environmental regulations tighten globally, the establishment of shore power infrastructure is becoming an essential investment for ports aiming to decrease their carbon footprints.

The transition to shore power is in alignment with Sohar’s long-term sustainability strategy, enhancing its appeal to eco-conscious shipping companies and supporting Oman Vision 2040, which aims for substantial reductions in carbon emissions across key sectors. The installation of shore power systems will benefit the environment by minimizing emissions from idling ships while also providing economic advantages for port operators, shipping companies and local communities.

Investors are invited to participate in this transformative initiative, which presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future while leveraging Sohar’s strategic location and advanced infrastructure. Sohar Port and Freezone is committed to establishing green port technologies, in turn attracting sustainable trade and investment.
