Oman and Cyprus strengthen maritime cooperation

11/02/25

Oman and the Republic of Cyprus have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance maritime collaboration. The agreements, aimed at fostering closer ties in the maritime sector, were formalised in a ceremony attended by key officials from both nations.

Consequently, the first MoU focuses on bolstering cooperation in maritime affairs, which are administered under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. It emphasises the development of bilateral relations underpinned by the principles of equality, mutual benefit, and free navigation. As a result, this agreement aligns with international and national legal frameworks, reinforcing the commitment to a safe and secure maritime environment.

However, the second MoU targets the mutual recognition of maritime certificates issued by the two countries, in line with the 1978 International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and its subsequent amendments.

This agreement will streamline the recognition of certificates for masters, officers and radio operators, enhancing the efficiency and mobility of maritime professionals. Both MoUs underscore the importance of modernizing the maritime sector through the integration of advanced technologies and collaborative efforts. Key areas of focus include improving maritime safety, security and sustainability, alongside efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime transport industry. The two nations also aim to address environmental challenges, including pollution from ships and to combat illegal activities such as piracy.

Additionally, the agreements promote the exchange of expertise and best practices in maritime education and training, while ensuring improved working conditions for seafarers. By reinforcing cooperation in these critical areas, the two countries are strengthening their strategic positions within the global maritime industry.
