Oman leading the way in arid agriculture innovation

13/08/24

Oman is revolutionising its agricultural industry by deploying innovative technology solutions to increase the Sultanates self sufficiency.

The country is embracing a groundbreaking agricultural technique known as seawater farming, or saline agriculture, which is transforming the ability to grow crops in arid regions. The method uses seawater for irrigation and addresses key issues such as freshwater scarcity, food security and environmental sustainability by cultivating salt-tolerant plants. Crops such as quinoa, barley, kale and spinach, which are naturally resistant to high salinity, thrive in this environment. Seawater farming not only enhances soil quality but also promotes sustainable practices in saline areas.

One notable advancement in seawater farming is the Seawater Greenhouse project. This innovative system replicates the natural water cycle by evaporating saline water and then condensing it into freshwater. Oman’s 2004 pilot project with Sultan Qaboos University showcased its potential, laying the groundwork for further developments to enable desert cultivation of fruits and vegetables.

Further projects include the Grow Dome in Sohar, launched in 2019 by the University of Sheffield in England in collaboration with Sohar University, employs advanced soilless farming and solar-powered desalination to convert seawater into freshwater for agriculture.

Oman’s extensive coastline and arid climate make it ideal for seawater farming. By integrating aquaculture with agriculture in coastal areas, Oman can create a circular economy, where fish farming provides nutrient-rich water for crops. Solar desalination technologies could further enhance this process, therefore conserving freshwater resources. Local entrepreneurs have the opportunity to innovate with eco-friendly materials like biocomposites and bio-bricks from salt-tolerant plants, supporting sustainable construction practices. Similarly, as the industry is relatively new, there are sizeable opportunities for new businesses and innovative startups to enter.

This approach aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040, focusing on sustainable development and reduced environmental impact. Seawater farming promises to improve food security, drive economic growth, create jobs and contribute to global environmental sustainability, paving the way for a resilient and prosperous future.
