Oman boosts Jobs and Investment using E-Commerce

30/07/24

Oman is undergoing a digital transformation and e-commerce - which involves the online transaction of goods and services - is making a notable economic impact in the Sultanate.

The growth of e-commerce in Oman is closely tied to the country's rapid adoption of technology. Since the 1970s, Omanis have quickly embraced new technologies, shifting directly from personal computers to mobile phones. This leap has significantly influenced the e-commerce sector, particularly through the rise of social media as a major platform for online transactions. As a result, social commerce has become a distinctive feature of the Omani market.

Most importantly, the Omani government has been instrumental in fostering this growth through substantial investments in infrastructure. Key sectors such as central banking, commerce, transportation and technology have seen significant improvements thereby creating a conducive environment for e-commerce. These strategic investments are positioning e-commerce as a vital driver of job creation and an attractive destination for foreign direct investment.

Moreover, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are the backbone of Oman’s economy, stand to gain significantly from the adoption of e-commerce. If 20% of the over 100,000 registered SMEs transition to online platforms, it could result in the creation of 150,000 to 200,000 new jobs. These positions could include roles such as graphic designers, photographers, accountants and marketers, offering diverse employment opportunities and contributing to economic growth.

Looking ahead, e-commerce in Oman will play a key role in diversifying the economy. Furthermore, it holds great potential and offers significant opportunities for new entrants and startups in the market. With continued infrastructure investments and a young, tech-savvy population, the sector is set for substantial growth. Providing entrepreneurs with the necessary tools and business formation support to thrive in the digital marketplace will be crucial in realizing this potential.
