Oman`s Be’ah municipal waste management agency is implementing initiatives and strategies aimed at unlocking energy and other value streams from waste.
Projects in various stages of early development include a utility-scale Waste-to-energy (WTE) system, a biogas plant and green waste conversion schemes. Further initiatives are in the planning stage to support the recycling of Lead Acid Batteries (LAB), tyres, construction and demolition waste, cardboard and paper, PET bottles, electrical and electronic waste and used cooking oil. Be’ah is spearheading the initiative in collaboration with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP). Such projects offer opportunities to established local companies as well as international enterprises looking to commence activity in the Sultanate.
In addition, Be’ah and Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) are developing a Reuse Centre specialising in repurposing and recycling in an effort to minimise waste and encourage sustainable consumption. In Al Batinah North Governorate, Be’ah has signed agreements with local Omani Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to maximise the utilisation of green waste from the Suhar landfill. As a result, commercially valuable products will be created while reducing the landfill burden.
In further project related news, Oman Food Investment Holding Company (Nitaj), the food sector development arm of Oman Investment Authority (OIA) is entering contractual arrangements that enable farm produce — primarily wheat, dates, cow and camel milk — to be procured by government backed food sector companies. As a result, there are huge opportunities for Omani farmers as well as overseas businesses wishing to establish agricultural sector operations in the Sultanate.
Currently, three Nitaj subsidiaries — Nakheel Oman Development, Oman Flour Mills and Al Morooj Dairy are actively engaging in this initiative. Figures show that Al Morooj Dairy has nearly doubled the number of Omani livestock farmers to 933 for the procurement of their cow and camel milk produce. Moreover, Oman Flour Mills contracted with a total of 63 farmers in 2023, representing a 156% increase over the previous year.
